Some people feel and heal better when they're at home. That's why Munson Healthcare's home infusion therapy can sometimes be a convenient option.

One woman from Traverse City is proof of that. You might not know it by her infectious smile and energetic personality but Nancy Arnold has been struggling with her health for years.

"Back in the 70s I started getting really sick," says Arnold.

After the span of several hospital visits for surgeries, Arnold was eventually diagnosed with Crohn's disease. She continued to struggle with it years later.

"The most recent time I had a bowel obstruction in June 2014, and I had to have surgery," says Arnold.

Since the surgery in 2014, Arnold has had to be a on special diet to maintain her nutrition. That's why she has an IV hook up with a machine called, total parenteral nutrition or TPN.

"Basically it replaces eating," says Arnold.

It's a form a home infusion therapy through Munson's home infusion pharmacy. The program provides everything from IV antibiotics, to IV catheter care or IV nutrition to patients like Nancy Arnold.

Arnold receives her treatment for 14 hours a day with the goal to help her digestive system heal. Her nurse, Sandy stops in to check on Nancy's vitals once a week.

"She is a jewel. I know I can call her anytime," says Arnold.

Besides her home care nurse, patients like Arnold who qualify for home infusion therapy have direct access to pharmacists in the Munson home infusion pharmacy.

"The patients have to take a lot of responsibility on themselves and nurses and pharmacy is here to support them," says Ben Demongey, the Munson home infusion clinical coordinator.

Demongey makes weekly calls to Nancy Arnold to check in on her home fusion treatment.

"If patients can do this it's helpful for them. They can be in their own environment, not around other people who are sick. You heal best at home," says Demongey.

The infusion treatments are also personally packaged and delivered to patients' homes. It's a close-knit relationship that creates peace of mind on all ends.

"That infusion pharmacy team is just fantastic. They call me every Tuesday," says Arnold.

Munson's home infusion therapy program has been around for 25-years. To see if this is something that you'd be a candidate for or if it's offered in your area through Munson Healthcare click here.
