Cold temps and lots of snow create ideal conditions for VASA race
Traverse City is getting ready to welcome in hundreds of cross country skiers and fat tire racers this weekend for the North American VASA Races.
The organizers say the cold temperatures are a good thing, providing the best trail conditions in years.
More than 800 racers from all over the country are making their way into Traverse City this week and are excited for a snow packed weekend on the trails.
The North American VASA is one of the top cross country skiing races in the country. But the great trails aren't all there is to be happy about when the race comes to town.
With hundreds of racers and their friends and family in town, organizers say they bring in a lot of money to the local economy too.
Hotels like Best Western, the Comfort Inn and Cambria Suites are nearly booked for the weekend.
"The VASA is really important in normal years, but even more so when people aren't traveling as mich because of the weather," said Ron Robinson, Director of Operations of Summerside Properties.
