CRAWFORD COUNTY, Mi (WPBN/WGTU)-- An investigation is underway after deputies say a 14-week-old puppy was sexually assaulted.

The incident happened March 12 around 6:20 p.m.

According to the Crawford County Sheriff's Office, the owners of the male Maltese Shih Tzu mix had let the puppy outside around 11 a.m. that morning and were unable to find the dog until around 3 p.m. that afternoon.

Deputies say the puppy was reported to be covered in mud and debris. When the owner attempted to give the puppy a bath, the puppy would not lift his tail.

The puppy was taken to an on-call veterinarian in Houghton Lake. The vet said the puppy had been a victim of sexual assault.

Despite not having any leads, deputies say the case remains open.
