Grand Traverse County voters will have the final say in November as to whether they'll pay an extra $1.05 per device per month for a 911 service upgrade.
Grand Traverse County commissioners approved the request from central dispatch officials Monday.
80 cents is charged to each phone line at this time. Officials want to raise the amount to $1.85 per line per month in order to update equipment.
â??We want to move forward into what's called next-gen or next generation 911. We want to be able to receive text messaging. We want people to know that whatever they're calling 911 on they're going to be able to reach us,â?? said Jamel Anderson, Grand Traverse County 911 Director.
If passed, the surcharge would cover all operational costs for central dispatch and provide an additional $457,000 to replace older equipment.
