A Kalkaska man is collecting Christmas trees for people in need
KALKASKA COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A Kalkaska man is collecting Christmas trees to donate to people in need.
"You can have as many Christmas presents as you want, but if you don't have a tree to put them under it doesn't feel like Christmas," said Cameron Porteous.
Porteous said the idea to start a Christmas tree drive came to him about two weeks ago.
"This year I was able to upgrade to a nicer tree and instead of just trying to sell [my old one] for a little bit of money I decided to donate it and bless someone that was in need," said Porteous.
So he made a post on Facebook offering up the tree and immediately got several messages from people interested.
Porteous ended up choosing the first person, a single mom with three kids, who reached out to him.
"They came to pick up that tree and she was so thankful," said Porteous. "I could see it in her face, in her smile and her eyes, she was just so happy to get a tree. I woke up the next morning after she picked it up and something just told me that I really needed to do something more."
And that's exactly what he did.
Porteous started the Facebook event Trees of Hope and began collecting trees at his car detailing shop in Kalkaska.
"There isn't any other big donation drives for trees," said Porteous. "There's toy drives, clothes drives, but no real Christmas [tree] drive."
Porteous said he just wants to help people have a memorable Christmas.
"Me and my family pull the tree out and we put it together and we decorate it together and that creates memories," said Porteous. "When you step back and you look at your tree it just gives you a feeling of Christmas."
You can drop off tree donations anytime until Dec. 8th at That Detail Shop in Kalkaska.
The address is 509 West Mile Road.
If you cant afford a Christmas tree this year you can swing by That Detail Shop to pick one up on Dec. 8th from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
