Northern Michigan woman gets ready to sail across the Atlantic
LEELANAU COUNTY (WPBN/WGTU) -- A northern Michigan woman is picking up her things and getting ready to set sail on an adventure.
"Am I terrified?" said Jessie Zevalkink. "Yes."
Zevalkink and her fiance are getting ready to take a two month long trip across the Atlantic Ocean to the shores of England.
"It started as a joke," said Zevalkink. "All of these things start as a joke and for some reason they become real."
Zevalkink said her fiance is a sailor and she has also grown up around sailing, so it just made sense.
"If you ask me it's the ultimate pre-marital test," said Zevalkink.
The couple will be making the trip on Zevalkink's father's 37 foot long sailboat, The Desiree.
"I actually prefer small spaces," said Zevalkink. "I like to have one of everything and know exactly where it is. So the small space is the least of my concerns."
The two plan to take off from Northport on Monday morning, but this isn't Zevalkink's first sailing adventure.
Back in 2012 Zevalkink actually took an even longer trip on an even smaller boat.
"A few years back I was on a boat that was 10 feet smaller than this," said Zevalkink. "It was a little CAL 27 with one of my best friends Katie Smith and her dog Reggie. We spent two years traveling America's Great Loop."
Since then Zevalkink has been back home in Northport and said she is more than ready to get back on the water.
The couple is expecting to make it to England by June.
