A 'sniff' by K-9 helps in vehicle search
Nico, a K-9 officer with the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office helped with a vehicle search for drugs.
Deputies stopped a vehicle at 1:56 a.m. Sunday in Suttons Bay for excessive speeding. Deputies noticed the odor of marijuana when the driver opened the window.
Investigators said all three people inside the car denied there were any drugs inside.
Deputy Greg Hornkohl and Nico were on duty and were called to the traffic stop.
Nico performed a sniff search of the outside of the vehicle and alerted that there were drugs inside. Once inside of the vehicle, he indicated a backpack, which was next to a 21-year-old Wyoming man may have drugs inside.
Deputies found less than 2 grams of marijuana in the backpack. No arrests were made and the case will be sent to the prosecutor for review.
Nico is a 2-year-old German Shepherd. He joined the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office in December, 2013.
