Accumulating snow along and south of M-72 on Wednesday, with all remaining cold
Another cold day in-store for all, with some across northern Michigan seeing accumulating snow as a fast approaching clipper system pushes through the Great Lakes on Wednesday.
High temperatures will range from 10° to the lower 20s (normal highs for the middle of December are in the upper 20s-lower 30s), with wind chills hovering in the single digits throughout the day. As for the clipper system, the heavier snow by a wide margin will fall along/west of a Traverse City-Cadillac-Clare line. If you are in the Eastern U.P./Straits/NE Lower Michigan you will see little to no snow and possibly a good amount of sunshine. For those farther south, however, snow will develop along Lake Michigan from Leelanau County south Wednesday morning through mid to late afternoon. There is fairly high confidence that the heaviest snow totals will fall around Manistee/Ludington into the Big Rapids areas. The weather models are still struggling with how much snow will fall with lower end amounts in the 2-4" range in the areas mentioned above Wednesday. Higher estimates are in the 5-7" range with areas including Manistee/Ludington/Big Rapids perhaps looking at more than a half foot of snow by the end of Wednesday. All in all, expect reduced travel conditions along and south of M-72 throughout the day with a sharp cutoff northward.
This clipper system moves out quickly Wednesday night, with only light lake effect behind it. Most stay dry, but lows will be cold once again - ranging from -1° to the teens.
Lake effect will be limited to the typical W-NW snow belts on Thursday, but will be on the light side. At most, a inch or two of snow is possible throughout the day for those areas. Temperatures warm a tad, ranging from the upper teens to middle 20s.
Another clipper arrives Friday leading to light snow at times across Northern Michigan. Temperatures slowly moderate by the end of the weekend, with many nearing the freezing mark on Sunday.
