The Alpena Education Association confirmed a mediator's proposed settlement on June 22 after the teachers' contracts expired on August 31, 2013.
The bargaining has been taking place for 14 months and teachers were facing a 16.7% salary reduction beginning the 2014-2015 school year.
According to the Alpena Education Association, the proposed settlement now will consist of a 10% salary reduction for 2014-2015 and 2015-2016.
"This agreement was reached because of additional pressure placed on the district through court proceedings, administrative hearings, and community concerns expressed at school board meetings," says Deb Larson, MEA UniServ Director.
"The contract settlements with the teachers and other employee groups are temporary solutions. The district must still respond to long term issues such as declining student enrollment and decreased state funding. Continuation of the status quo is not the solution," says Larson.
The Alpena School Board is scheduled to vote on the mediator's proposed settlement soon.
