The American Red Cross in Northwest Michigan is working with the local community to get smart about water safety.
They've started a new initiative aimed at reducing childhood drowning. Theyâ??re holding classes in water safety and lifeguarding at the Grand Traverse Civic Center.
Their first life guarding class is being held August 11th through the 14th, and two people will receive scholarships to participate.
â??It's not about getting a job as a lifeguard,â?? said Americorps Disaster Services Associate Dani Dierck. â??We just want as many people as possible out there to learn the skills on how to save someone in case someone is ever in trouble when they're out on the beach.â??
Those interested in either the life guarding class, or the water safety class can call the Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation at 231-922-4818.
