Archangel Gabriel Orthodox Church breaks ground

Archangel Gabriel Greek Orthodox Church broke ground on a new church on Sunday.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Archangel Gabriel Greek Orthodox Church broke ground on a new sanctuary and community hall on Sunday.

The church has not had its own building to this point, and had been using other buildings for its services.

"Everything else was not really ours," said Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit, the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Michigan. "We used it for our purposes of worship and fellowship, but here, what's unique is that we have begun this groundbreaking process which opens up the whole future for this community."

The ceremony started with a brief service outside at the church's location in Williamsburg off US-31.

Priests then anointed the site by pouring holy oil on a cross-marked stone tablet before getting to work with some shovels.

The construction of the new church is being funded entirely by donations.

A completion date has yet to be determined.
