Jury selection has begun in day one of the trial of Sean Michael Phillips, the 21 year-old man who is accused of abducting his then 4 and a half month old daughter Kate Phillips.
Phillips faces a charge of unlawful imprisonment, a 15 year felony in the disappearance of his daughter Kate.
Authorities say baby Kate was last seen on June 29th 2011 when Sean took off with her from her mother Arielle's house in Ludington.
Nearly 80 prospective jurors packed the mason county circuit courtroom this morning.
And over the course of several hours the defense and prosecuting attorneys attempted to sift through the crowd of people to seat a final jury of 12, with 2 alternates.
Sean Phillips looked different than we're used to seeing him in court, no orange jump suit or bullet proof vest, rather a collared shirt and tie. Throughout the day, he was very attentive, well-composed and showed no emotion.
Baby Kate's mom Arielle Courtland only appeared in court briefly to be introduced as a witness to potential jurors.
Early on in the day, Circuit Court Judge Richard Cooper asked several questions and based on answers eliminated some potential jurors.
Prosecution and defense spent several hours asking long series of questions to the potential jurors.
Some of the questions included:
What news channels do you watch?
Do you watch the Nancy Grace Show? (Because this case was spotlighted nationally on this program)
Have you ever been a victim of a crime?
Do you have military training? (Because Sean Phillips used to be a National Guard Reserve)
Did you participate in search for baby Kate?
