Beaver Island senior receives life-saving award for helping choking man

The Sheriff presented the life-saving award to Ron Marsh on Beaver Island Wednesday.

A senior at Beaver Island received a life-saving award from the Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office for helping a man who was choking.

The Sheriff presented the award to Ron Marsh at the school Wednesday.

Marsh is credited with saving the life of Bob Banville, who was choking on something he ate. Marsh saw the Banville was choking and performed the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the item that was blocking his airway. Marsh then waiting with Banville for emergency crews to arrive.

The Sheriff's Office reports Marsh learned how to use the Heimlich maneuver through an occupational class as well as training from volunteering with the fire department and working at the Beaver Island Boat Company.
