A 52-year-old Cedar man was killed in a crash on his ATV over the weekend.
Deputies were called to the home in Centerville Township Saturday evening shortly before 9. Authorities believe the crash happened about an hour before it was reported.
According to the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office, John J. Stachnik was driving his ATV on a steep part of his driveway when it left the hard-packed portion and went into soft gravel. The sheriff's office says the ATV went on a counter-clockwise spin, then rolled over into an embankment. Stachnik was thrown from the vehicle and pinned underneath.
Deputies lifted the ATV enough to remove the man from under it. He was then taken to Munson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Deputies say Stachnik was not wearing a helmet.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. A blood test to determine blood alcohol content is required by the state under the Fatal Accident Report.
