Clare County Sheriff's help bust Nigerian fraud scheme

The Clare County Sheriff's Detectives helped the Department of Homeland Security break up a fraud operation today.

They seized over $28,000 worth of fraudulently purchased external hard drives.

Investigators say residents from Nigeria bought the hard drives as well as computers from a company in Tennessee and then shipped them to four homes around the country. One of those homes was in Clare County.

This is the third Nigerian scam that has been discovered that involved citizens from Clare County.

People in those homes would then shop them to a location in Texas, where they would be shipped to Nigeria.

Sheriff John Wilson says if you are contacted by someone wanting you to receive and ship items, you should report it otherwise you could end up being part of a criminal enterprise. Sheriff Wilson says that all three Nigerian scams his Department has been involved in have been conducted in the same manner.
