GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Coast Guard crew from Air Station Traverse City is kicking off training in a new helicopter.

The Coast Guard says Wednesday started their training and familiarization period that will last until September as their MH-60 aircraft and aircrews prepare for full operational capabilities in the Great Lakes.

The first of three MH-60T Jayhawks arrived last week.

Two additional MH-60 aircraft will arrive in phases, one in May and another by mid-July.

The Coast Guard says the MH-60 is better for flying in winter environments and being a larger aircraft, it can carry more fuel and help improve response time.
