Coast Guard still breaking ice for merchant ships in northern Michigan

The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw is still leading ships through ice in St. Mary's River and Whitefish Bay.

The 2013 ice-breaking season is lasting longer than usual due to higher-than-average snowfall across the northern Great Lakes.

A public affairs officer with the Coast Guard tells 7 & 4 News that they expect ice breaking operations to continue for at least the next two weeks.
