Community-based art project coming to Traverse City

The Wishing Tree will be placed at the corner of Hall and Garland streets in the Warehouse District.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- On Wednesday afternoon, the Traverse City Arts Commission approved the design and materials for a new community-based art project.

"The Wishing Tree" is a full-grown tree that will feature clay leaves that are to be written on by the public.

The tree will be installed on the corner of Hall and Garland streets in the Warehouse District in front of Hotel Indigo.

"Members from the community wanted to see more community art projects, rather than individuals that maybe would come from outside of the area," said Arts Commission Chair Christie Minervini. "This is 100% local, and we're giving members of the community and the public the opportunity to contribute to a permanent piece of artwork here in Traverse City."

The leaves will be available for the public to contribute during events of Up North Pride Week in June.
