PRESQUE ISLE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Onaway School community is in mourning after the unexpected death of one of its students.

Alexia "Lexi" LaHaie, 17, a senior at Onaway High School was killed in a crash in Cheboygan County Thursday.

Lexi's mother Danielle LaHaie said her daughter loved life and had a bright future.

"Lexi came from a very large family," Danielle said. "We're loud and outgoing and we loved each other endlessly."

Danielle also said her daughter was involved in band, cheerleading, track and robotics.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Onaway robotics team 5534, 4549 M-33 South Onaway, MI 49765.

The following statement was released early Friday from Onaway Community Schools Superintendent Rod Fullerton:

Our School is deeply saddened by this tragic accident. Our entire community is hurting right now. We have lost the life of a very promising young woman. Lexie was a student who had a few obstacles in her life that she overcame with courage and pride.

She was hard working and very dedicated to whatever she was involved in. She was a member of our Robotics team, Drama Club, Band, and many other groups where she always did as much as she could do to make everything happen.

She will be missed dearly, our hearts are simply broken. But right now, our jobs must be to support her family. They need all of the support, kindness, respect, and love that we can lift up and give to them. That is what a strong community does, and that is our plan.
Sincerely
Rod Fullerton
Superintendent
