Community sorts thousands of toys for Toys for Tots
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- With the Holidays just a couple weeks away Santa's helpers went to work on Sunday for a Toys for Tots toy sort.
Nearly 4,000 toys were sorted at the Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City.
Dozens of volunteers of all ages sorted toys for children in need.
The toys were separated into age groups from infants to teenagers.
Organizer Mike Kent said the community support made Sunday's sorting even a success.
"We are always blown away by the number of people that step up," Kent said. "You know we have Boy Scouts troops, Cub Scout troops that have shown up here, they might need Christian service hours or something like that but that's not the main reason why they are here. The main reason why they are here is because they know that toys for tots does a lot for northern Michigan and they want to be a part of that."
The final toy sort is next Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Coast Guard Station.
Organizers said they don't need any more volunteers but encourage everyone to donate toys at drop off sites this week.
