Condo complex fire in Cheboygan
After about four hours, crews from six fire departments finished putting out the massive fire at the Summer Mooring Condominium Association just south of Cheboygan Friday afternoon.
Investigators say they have narrowed down the source of the fire to have started from either the third floor or the roof. The fire marshal has ruled that the fire was not criminal in nature.
Inverness Fire Marshal Dan Socha said the fire, which started around 3:00 p.m. Friday, may spread from one of the third-floor balconies to the roof.
â??When the state trooper got here I was right behind him,â?? said Socha. â??We looked and it looked like a lot of fire was on the third story balcony and it looked like it went up and got into the loft.â??
Michigan State Police Fire Marshals will begin investigating the official source of the fire Monday morning.
Summer Mooring Resident Heather Horan had only been living at the complex for six months. Many of her belonging were destroyed in the fire.
â??I was planning on moving tomorrow,â?? said Horan. â??All my stuff was in boxes against the wall and now itâ??s gone, all gone. It could have been a lot worse. I mean, itâ??s just stuff; it can be replaced.â??
One firefighter was sent to the hospital for heat exhaustion.
Everyone that was inside the building made it out without injury.
The insurance investigators will be on site Friday to sart their assessment of the damage.
