Crews clear trees for expansion project at Cherry Capital

The construction on the the runway at Cherry Capital Airport may be finished, but the final phase of the extension project is now underway.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The construction on the the runway at Cherry Capital Airport may be finished, but the final phase of the extension project is now underway.

Crews began removing obstructions near the runway Monday.

That includes about 1,600 trees and several utility poles in the area between Garfield Avenue and Barlow Street.

Airport Director Kevin Klein say they've been working closely to negotiate with property owners affected by the clearing.

"Regardless if we did the runway or not, we would've had to go and work with the property owners in the same fashion, to get the removal of those trees that were affecting the runway protection zones," Klein said.

According to Klein, extending the runway actually decreased the amount of trees they have to cut down.

The clearing is expected to be complete by March. Klein says it shouldn't disrupt any flights.
