Crews use helicopter, dive teams and sonar in search for missing kayaker

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff Office has set up a command post at the boat launch on Baggs Road to resume searching Lake Skegemog for a missing man.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office has set up a command post at the boat launch on Baggs Road to resume searching Lake Skegemog for a missing man.

John Murray White, 46, of Traverse City did not report to work Monday and was last seen Saturday.

A helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, two boats, dive teams from Roscommon County and Antrim County are assisting in the search. Sonar equipment is also expected to be brought in to help in the effort.

The Coast Guard received a call from the sheriff's office Tuesday requesting assistance after a kayak was located in the northern end of Lake Skegemog. One life jacket was found inside the kayak and another was located about 150 yards away. Family members say White frequently used his kayak on the lake.

White's black Dodge Ram was found at the Baggs Road DNR boat launch on the lake.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew and boats with the sheriff's office and DNR searched for about two hours Tuesday evening before the effort was suspended for the night.

If you have any information on White, contact the Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie Command Center at 906-635-3237 or the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at 231-995-5002.
