Deputies looking for those responsible for string of thefts in Benzie County
The Benzie County Sheriff's Office is investigating a string of burglaries in the Lake Ann area over the last couple of days.
According to Sheriff Ted Schendel, the area has been "hit pretty hard" in the last couple of days with thieves stealing from cars.
Sheriff Schendel said numerous things were taken from vehicles including oxygen tanks, CD's and "whatever they can get their hands on."
He says there is a possibility that the oxygen tanks were being used for drug-related activities.
There have also been 4 reports of breaking and entering of residences along Crystal Lake. Most of the homes were vacation homes, but some were year-long homes where garages were left open.
Sheriff Schendel said he expects the reports of break-ins to increase as vacation home owners return to the area.
"Memorial Day is the time when most people come from downstate and come up to their cottages for the first time and then they realize that a burglary has occurred," Schendel said.
"My tip to everyone here in Benzie County is 'we've got to start locking our doors. We've got to start shutting our garages doors, and we've got to start locking our cars and hiding our valuables," Schendel said.
Sheriff Schendel said his office has received several tips and they already have some suspects in mind, but it's in a the early stages.
