Deputies find missing 9-year-old and 10-year-old sisters

Charlotte and Clarissa Thomas were found safe.

OCEANA COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU)---The Oceana County Sheriff's Office says they have found a missing 9-year-old and 10-year-old.

Deputies say 9-year-old Clarissa Thomas and 10-year-old Charlotte Thomas from the Hart area were reported missing Monday morning.

"We got the call around 8 AM this morning that they were missing and we were given the information that they had run away so we weren't suspicious of any foul play at that time," said Oceana County Sheriff, Craig Mast.

We're told the girls have run off in the orchard before.

According to deputies the sisters climbed out of the window of their home and ran Monday around 1:00 a.m. They were reportedly in the apple orchard on the farm near their home that is family-owned.

Oceana County Sheriff's Deputies and the Michigan State Police searched for the girls for nearly six hours. Deputies requested the State Police Helicopter to help in the search but that was canceled after the second missing girl was found.

Nine-year-old Clarissa Thomas was found wandering after 11:00 Monday morning.

Michigan State Police found 10-year-old Charlotte shortly after 2:00 PM Monday.

Charlotte was found by a Michigan State Police K-9 unit in a ditch or pond.

The girl's mother says she's thankful for all the law enforcement that helped find her daughters.

Charlotte told reporters after she was found that she had been walking through thorns and high brush. She said she taking a nap when she was found.

The young girl said she was looking for her dad. According to her mother, their father has been out of state for several months.

"When I saw the dog, I was happy because I was scared," Charlotte said after she was found.

Neither girl has any severe injuries; 10-year-old Charlotte had some scratches and mud on her legs but both were OK.

"That's what we were most concerned about, was bringing these young girls home," Mast said.

Sheriff Mast says dozens of people called the Oceana County Sheriff's Office and showed up at the location where they were searching for the girls asking if they could volunteer to help find the girls.

Mason County Search Management Team had just arrived on the scene to help shortly before the older sister was found.

Child Protective Services is investigating.
