Downed power line causes traffic backups and déjà vu for drivers

A car accident caused a power line to fall across U.S. 31 at 3-mile in East Bay Township.

Drivers were detoured on a busy stretch of highway Tuesday morning, for the second time this month.

A car accident around 7:30am caused a power line to fall across U.S. 31 between 3-mile and 4-mile in East Bay Township. The roads have since been re-opened.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff Office said George Jorkasky, of Traverse City, lost control of his pickup truck, hit a power transformer and then another car. Jorkasky was taken to the hospital. The people in car he hit were not hurt.

The investigation remains open. Police say they have not yet determined whether or not citations or charges will be issued.

Power crews spent hours on the scene trying to repair the damage to the power lines and transformer. Power was restored late this afternoon.

On April 12, a car crash took down a power pole and forced U.S. 31 to be closed for much of the day.
