The Cheboygan County Board of Commissioners is taking the next step to keep their county's drug court going.
The Cheboygan County Drug Court Program got the approval to apply for $107,612 in grant money from the Michigan Drug Court Grant program for the 2015 fiscal year.
The deadline to apply for the grant is August 1.
Cheboygan County 53rd Circuit Court Judge Scott Pavlich, who supervises Cheboygan County Drug Court, said a majority of the grant money will go towards paying for drug counseling and treatment of its 18 volunteers.
â??It's pretty simple,â?? said Pavlich. â??If we don't have the money, you can't provide the service. I don't know where these folks would really go in the private sector to get these services. I don't know if the participants we have could afford to go out and obtain these services.â??
According to Pavlich, since the start of the program towards the end of 2011, less than half of those that opted to take part in an alternative program instead of going to jail graduated.
â??Sixteen are better than less than 16,â?? said Pavlich. â??The sixteen that have graduated have made remarkable progress. They now have jobs. Some of them are employers. Theyâ??re paying their taxes. Theyâ??ve been re-unified with their children.â??
