Explosion destroys outhouse at boat launch
An outhouse at the School Lake Boat Launch was destroyed by an explosion early Sunday morning.
A neighbor at the intersection of Maple City Road and W. Harbor Highway, nearly 2 miles away from the launch, called Leelanau Dispatch around 4:30 Sunday morning. The caller said he heard a large explosion that shook his house.
Sheriff's deputies were sent to the area but were unable to locate any sign of an explosion.
Later in the day, dispatch received a call that an outhouse at the School Lake Boat Launch had been severely damaged.
Park Service rangers discovered that the outhouse appeared to have been blown up and called in the State Police Bomb Squad Monday morning.
Technicians were able to determine that a bomb had been placed in or next to the structure. The Leelanau County Sheriff reports the damage is estimated to cost $14,000.
The launch site has been re-opened to the public.
