Facebook post could be linked to Leelanau County home invasion

Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a crime that could be linked to a recent post about a homeowner taking a trip downstate.

Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a crime that could be linked to a recent post about a homeowner taking a trip downstate.

The crime targeting the Bingham Township home was reported at 10:20 p.m. Saturday. The homeowners called 911 after they returned from a trip and realized some items were missing.

Deputies found footprints in the snow which led to a nearby cul-de-sac where it appears the thief or thieves left in a vehicle. There was no forced entry and an iPad and iPod were stolen.

Investigators believe that a Facebook post stating that the residents were going to a college basketball game Saturday afternoon may have been an invitation to the suspect that the house would be unoccupied.

The Sheriff is reminding people not to post information about when their house will be empty which could attract thieves. By posting vacation photos or other information about current or future travel plans, you provide a window of opportunity that criminals need to commit a home invasion.

Anyone with information regarding the home invasion in Bingham Township Saturday is asked to contact the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office at tips@co.Leelanau.mi.us or the confidential tip line at 231-256-8696.
