LEELANAU COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office is warning local businesses about fake $100 bills showing up in the area.

During the past month, the sheriff's office has handled a couple of complaints where businesses have accepted $100 bills and then realized the bill was fake.

The most recent incident was on Wednesday night, a person tried to pass a fake bill at a gas station in Elmwood Township. The clerk was observant and realized immediately that there was an issue. Therefore the sheriff's office has identified the suspect and that case is under investigation.

The bills in question can be purchased very cheaply off the internet. The sheriff's office says at first the bills appear authentic and the person presenting the bill will usually hand it to the clerk with the bill face down as it is harder to detect the back of the bill as fraudulent.

The sheriff's office is asking businesses to check closely any large bill that they receive.
