Ferris State University student hospitalized after off-campus shooting

One Ferris State University student is hospitalized after an off-campus shooting Saturday morning.

Police in Big Rapids are investigating a student's shooting at an off-campus apartment complex near Ferris State University.

Officials at the college canceled classes, basketball games and other sporting events Saturday in the hours after the 4:15 a.m. shooting at the Venlo Place apartments.

The university said on its website Saturday afternoon that police searched two apartments on the campus looking for the person believed to have shot the student, but they turned up nothing.

The victim, whose name and condition were not released, was transferred to a Grand Rapids hospital. His wounds were not believed to be life-threatening.

According to Ferris State's news release, the unknown suspect is believed to be a tall, African-American male with dreadlocks.
