Firefighters from the Alpena Fire department were called to a fire at a cement plant in Alpena Friday morning.
Crews arrived to Lafarge Corporate, 1435 Ford Ave., around 10:24 a.m. for a conveyer system that was on fire. The fire reached about 130 ft. in the air starting in the middle of the conveyer belt.
The Alpena Fire department called for backup to surrounding departments due to the lack of water supply in the quarry as well as their hoses were not long enough to reach the conveyer.
Area fire departments responded by bringing tanker trucks to help control the fire.
The conveyer belt, used to take rocks from the quarry and into the building, is so burnt that the rollers and bearings are unusable. The fire traveled in both directions and did reach a little of the building.
The plant is temporarily shut down and the company contacted a contractor who has another belt system to use while the other is fixed.
