Flags to fly half-staff in honor of State Rep John Kivela

(WPBN/WGTU) -- US and Michigan flags will be lowered to half-staff on Friday in honor of State Representative John Kivela.

Kivela served as mayor of Marquette from 2008 to 2013.

He was serving his third term in the Michigan House of Representatives when he was arrested for drunk driving Monday night.

He was found dead at his home in Lansing on Tuesday just hours after he was released from jail.

His daughter made a post on Facebook the same day saying, "I wouldn't wish the disease of alcoholism against my worst enemy, my father took his life because of his disease." The post goes on to say, "I had an amazing childhood, may parents gifted me my education and supported me into the most amazing adventurous life I could ever imagine, a life not possible if I had not been raised by John Kivela."

The post has been shared more than 3,000 times.

There will be a service in his honor this Saturday at 2 p.m. inside the University Center at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
