Free fishing weekend encourages new fishermen onto the water
MICHIGAN (WPBN/WGTU) -- For two days in February, those without a license will be able to fish throughout Michigan for free.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced the "#MiFreeFishingWeekend" February 17-18.
Not only will people be able to fish without paying a license fee but the entrance fees to state parks will also be waived for the weekend.
The winter free fishing event started in 1994 as a way to raise awareness of the fishing opportunities in Michigan's 11,000 inland lakes.
Michigan DNR Fisheries Division Chief, Jim Dexter says bundling up for this event is a great experience.
“For those avid anglers, we encourage you to take someone out who has never experienced winter fishing to show them how simple and fun it can be,” Dexter said.
Roscommon County will also be hosting their event, Winterfest, to go along with Free Fishing Weekend.
The event on Higgins Lake will include a fishing derby and a pancake breakfast.
