A freighter that ran aground near Mackinac Island on Thursday and got stuck, has now been 'unstuck'.

Assistant Fire Chief at the Mackinac Island Fire Department, Jason St. Onge says the American Spirit freighter got stuck around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Island Passage which sits in front of the Mackinac Island Harbor.

It is unclear at this time, what caused the freighter to run aground.

      The Vessel is carrying taconite.

Fire crews have investigated the freighter and say that the only environmental threat are the fuel tanks, but say that there is no indication that they are compromised at this time.

The shipping channel is closed to freighter traffic, but is open for ferry traffic.

St. Onge says the freighter is displaying a starboard list, meaning that is is leaning to the right.

      The Coastguard has been notified.

Freighter crews remain on the ship, and St. Onge says they are not in any danger, and that there are no injuries at this time.
