Gold Star Mother Statue unveiled in emotional ceremony
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- Mothers were brought to tears at the newest statue addition to the grand traverse area veterans memorial park.
The statue is for the Gold Star Mothers, who on Sunday faced the heartache of losing their sons and daughters to war.
This statue has taken more than three years of planning and was paid for by fundraising $60,000.
The state project was initiated by a Gold Star Mothers member, Pams Arens.
“I thought how would I feel if my daughter was killed in a war that we shouldn't be in,” said Pam Arens. “I just thought that these moms need to know that people are thinking of them and praying for them.”
Gold Star Mothers say they hope this statue will bring some peace to all mothers and family members that had sons and daughters in war and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
“It doesn't just affect the mother. It effects the father, the brother, the sister, the aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, everybody,” said Cindy Schwartz-Walters, a Gold Star Mother. “They want them to know that we care and we are here for you and we want you to help you in any way that we can that we can.”
