Good Samaritan hit and killed by oncoming car

Jeremy Stiles was hit and killed by an oncoming car in Isabella County.

A Big Rapids man, who stopped to see if he could help another driver pulled to the side of the road, was hit and killed by an oncoming car.

It happened Tuesday at 10:10pm on west M-20 near Sherman Road in Isabella County.

Investigators say a

vehicle had stopped with its hazards on and called 911 in reference to a deer that way lying dead in the road.

Jaremy Stiles pulled up behind the vehicle to see if the driver needed help. He turned his lights off and walked up to talk to the driver of the other vehicle. When Stiles was told about the dead deer, he began returning to his car.

At the same time, a pickup driven by Randall Neeland was approaching, saw the deer but not the cars and drove to the right to miss running over the deer. At the last second he saw Stiles and swerved to the right into a ditch. Deputies believe Stiles feared he was going to be hit if he stayed where he was, so he ran towards the ditch, but ended up running into the path of the pickup.

Stiles, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene.
