Grand Traverse Sheriff's office sends warning about phone scam
The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office is warning residents about phone calls that are being placed claiming to be the Sheriff's Office.
According to the Sheriff's Office, two incidents have been reported about residents receiving false phone calls claiming that the residents have missed jury duty and that there are fines and warrants out for their arrest.
The caller tells the victims that they are from the sheriff's department and gives real names of employees who work there. The caller proceeds to tell the residents that if they do not pay their fines, they will be arrested.
The Sheriff's Office wants to make it clear that the office does not call people who have missed jury duty and they do not have bench warrants issued for their arrest, demanding money.
If you or someone you know receives a call making such claims, contact the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office at (231)995-5000.
