Homeless man arrested for stealing from donation jar
A 57-year-old homeless man was arrested for taking money from a donation jar for a sick Glen Lake student at a Solon Township business.
Employees at the store called 911 Wednesday evening to report a man driving an older white mini-van had backed into another customer's car and left without stopping. They also reported the man had taken money from a donation jar.
While investigating on the scene, employees reported the man had been acting suspicious while standing near the checkout lane. They noticed the top to the jar, which had been there only moments before, was missing.
The deputy looked through surveillance video and saw the suspect taking an unknown amount of money from the jar. He then purchased something using the money and left the store. Surveillance footage also showed the man backing into the parked car in the parking lot.
Deputies were told by Suttons Bay Police that the man had been panhandling in Suttons Bay was was living in his van.
The deputy caught up with the man in Bingham Township. He was arrested for larceny and was taken to the Leelanau County Jail.
