Hundreds gather to mourn drowning victim
Hundreds of friends and family gathered at the Open Space in Traverse City tonight to remember the life of Owen Williamson, the 17 year old Traverse City West High School student who died Friday night. Williamson drowned while swimming with friends at the Twin Lake Park.
The memorial gathering was organized by a friend who sang with Williamson in the high school choir. She says that even though they didn't have much time to plan, they knew this could provide a chance for those hurting to heal. "We wanted the whole community to be able to come together and be together because on Friday after it happened, we all went to a friend's house and were together and that really really helped" says Emma Winowiecki. The crowd consisted mainly of teenagers who shared stories of Owen. Candles were lit while Owen's favorite music was played.
A formal visitation and memorial service will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8pm at Reynolds Jonkoff Funeral Home, with a funeral on Thursday at 11 am at the Presbyterian Church of Traverse City.
