SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU)-- With the school year just around the corner, several local businesses and volunteers are teaming up to help you with the cost of back to school supplies.

On Friday, hundreds of students received free backpacks and other school supplies at the Big Bear Arena in Sault Ste. Marie.

We're told more than 570 backpacks were handed out on Friday, which is more than ever before.

Along with free school supplies, there was also a free child ID program and free vision screening.

The back to school event is planned annually by the Chippewa County Department of Health and Human Services, Salvation Army and United Way.
