Investigators closer to identifying male body found in burning car
Investigators are still working to identify a body that was found in a burning car early Monday morning, but say they do know that it is a Hispanic male.
Manistee County Sheriff Dale Kowalkowski says investigators have a lead on who the man is, and are working with family members to get a positive identity through DNA.
Medical examiners in Grand Rapids say there are no obvious signs of trauma to the body, but they have not determined the cause of death.
Crews were called to the fire around 2:30 a.m. Monday after a passerby reported the fire. They say it exploded shortly after the passerby arrived.
Authorities arrived to find the car, on M-115 near Erwin Road in Cleon Township, engulfed in flames.
Kowalkowski says the State Fire Marshal determined that the fire did not start as a result of an engine problem. He says it started on the passenger side of the car.
Deputies say the car had a Tennessee license plate, but information found inside of the car indicates another state.
Investigators do not know why the person was in the area.
