A job fair in Traverse City Tuesday helped veterans and active duty military members find work.
The Hiring Our Heroes event took place at Northwestern Michigan College's Hagerty Conference Center on Tuesday afternoon. Hiring Our Heroes, a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, was launched in March 2011 as a nationwide initiative to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment. Hiring Our Heroes has hosted more than 450 hiring fairs in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. Right now, more than 18,500 veterans and military spouses had obtained jobs through the initiative.
Veterans, active duty military members, guard and reserve members and military spouses were invited to attending the unique job fair, where more than 60 local and national employers set up booths to interact with them.
"It's a promise in a sense and it's a commitment, not unlike the commitment the veterans make to our country," explained Scott Herzberg, NMC Veteran Services. "We say we're military friendly now we have an opportunity to prove it and we're going to take care of you and we're going to try to match your skill set with our needs so that everyone can benefit."
