Kelli Stapleton arraigned on attempted homicide charges
Kelli Stapleton, the Benzie County woman charged with the attempted homicide of her autistic daughter, was arraigned in circuit court Tuesday.
Stapleton pleaded not guilty in the Benzie County courtroom.
At the arraignment, Stapleton's defense attorney, Heidi Hodek, also attempted to have Judge James Batzer sign an evaluation for criminal responsibility. Batzer refused to sign the form, which would have allowed an assessment of Stapleton to determine if she was sane at the time she allegedly committed the crime.
Stapleton is accused of attempting to kill her teenage daughter, Isabelle, as well as herself. She remains in Benzie County Jail, where she is held on a $1.5 million bond.
The next court date has not been set yet.
