Learning more about invasive sea lamprey

The Great Lakes Fishery Commission has established a database on its website with videos featuring invasive sea lamprey and fisheries research projects.

The Great Lakes Fishery Commission has established a database on its website with videos featuring invasive sea lamprey and fisheries research projects.

A key task for the commission is controlling the population of lamprey, which invaded the lakes in the last century and nearly wiped out lake trout and other species. They are an eel-like creature with sharp teeth that clamp onto the sides of fish and suck out their bodily fluids.

The video database contains nearly 100 clips. Some show sea lamprey in the wild and spawning, while others show parts of the sea lamprey control program and fisheries research.

There are also hundreds of still photo images. They and the videos are available to the media, teachers and students and the public for no charge.
