LGBTQ+ prom provides community for students
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MICH (WPBN/WGTU) — While high schools across Michigan are preparing for their own proms, there's another prom taking place this weekend in Traverse City. Polestar LGBT Community Center and LGB Teens Upnorth are throwing their second annual prom specifically for LGBTQ+ youth. Organizers have named the event "The Queer Prom."
The event will take place in Traverse City with the goal of giving all LGBTQ+ teens in northern Michigan a safe and accepting community.
“I think for some of the more rural or outlying schools, or students who don't necessarily have that community, this is an event where they can come and see youth that are just like them and socialize with other LGBTQ+ teens and kind of be in a really accepting and open atmosphere,” said high school student Eamonn McGonigle, who also works with Polestar and is the president of the Gay- Straight Alliance at Traverse City West High School.
The event is Saturday, April 7 from 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. and is open to all LGBTQ+ youth and their allies ages 14-18. Tickets are $20 and are available at the door or online at THIS LINK. You must also have either a student or state ID to enter. Local hair salon Pinups and Needles is also providing free makeup and hair styling services for anyone attending the event.
