Long-time minister killed in car crash into lake

The dive team found 53-year-old Kurt Allen Hoffman, of Stanton, dead behind the wheel with his seatbelt still on. No one else was in the car.

A long-time minister in Montcalm County was found dead in his car in Lampman Lake Sunday.

Montcalm County Sheriff William Barnwell said a passerby reported a car submerged in the lake on the east side of S. Brown Rd around 10 a.m.

The car was about 30 feet off the road and completely submerged in about six feet of water.

The dive team found 53-year-old Kurt Allen Hoffman, of Stanton, dead behind the wheel with his seatbelt still on. No one else was in the car.

Investigators determined Hoffman failed to negotiate a curve in the road, hit a tree and went into the lake at a high rate of speed.

Family members reported last seeing Hoffman on Saturday morning. Hoffman was a minister for the Trinity Church in Stanton.

An autopsy was performed and the cause of death was determined to be drowning.
