The M-65 bridge over the Thunder Bay River is being closed for safety reasons.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, two large voids were discovered on the bridge, which goes over the north branch of the Thunder Bay River, late last week.
Crews shut down the bridge and rerouted traffic to investigate. Engineers are monitoring the area until the road is fully repaired and safe for drivers.
The Department of Transportation clarified that the bridge has not moved or settled, only the pavement of the approach is damaged.
The current detour route is about 12-miles and includes Long Rapids, Bolton and Long Lake Roads. Drivers should plan an extra 15 minutes into their trips.
