Murder suspect in custody after man found dead in home
GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A 23 -year-old man is behind bars on open murder charges after his neighbor, a 48-year-old man, was found dead inside his Garfield Township home Wednesday morning.
The murder is being investigated by the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police.
Deputies say they got a report of an unresponsive man in a home on David Place in Garfield Township around 7:35 a.m. Wednesday.
When deputies got to the scene, they found a dead man inside the home with bodily trauma.
Deputies believed the 23-year-old neighbor was in the dead man's home at some point Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
Deputies took the 23-year-old man to Munson Medical Center for a physical and mental evaluation. He was later charged with open murder and lodged in Grand Traverse County Jail.
A neighbor says her step-dad saw the suspect as he was being put in the back of a patrol car.
"When he went to work this morning, he went to leave and they almost didn't let him leave," said Angelique Grooms, who lives nearby. "He said that he saw the guy in the police car, I guess who they took to the hospital, and that he was crying saying that he was sorry."
The sheriff's office believes they have been in contact with everyone involved in this incident.
There is no more information at this time showing any threat to the public.
The investigation into the death continues.
