Man accused of hitting off-duty deputy with car formally charged
The 25-year-old Traverse City man arrested for hitting an off-duty deputy with his car then driving away has been formally charged.
Chaise Michael Russell was charged with operating while intoxicated causing serious injury as well as failure to stop at an accident.
The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. May 31 on Barney Road near Gray Road.
Richard Bielewicz, a corrections officer, was riding his bike and was hit from behind by the car allegedly driven by Russell.
Russell allegedly drove away and was later stopped on Cedar Run Rd. by a deputy who "observed signs of intoxication."
Bielewicz was treated at the hospital and was back at home two days later.
